Your Foolproof Guide to Burning a Diedrich Candle Correctly

Soy wax offers a great sustainable alternative to paraffin. Not only is soy is more ethical but it is also vegan! If cared for properly, Diedrich candles are a great investment because you can easily get 50+ hours of burn time out of each one!

However, just like anything else, we have to care for soy candles properly to maximize its life. Here are our top 5 tips on how to care for your Diedrich candles!

Tip 1 ~ Always trim the wick

So you just got home with your favorite Diedrich candle, and you're ready to light it up. Well, we're flattered BUT before you light your new candle, trim the wick to a 1/4". Wicks left long can cause your candle to burn uneven.

Tip 2 ~ The first burn

This is critical - the first burn is very important. When you light your candle for the first time, you want to make sure the wax melts all the way to the edge of the container before you extinguish it. Failing to do so, will create a "memory ring". Once a candle has a memory ring it will tunnel for the rest of its life. For our candles this takes around 2 hours.

Tip 3 ~ Don't burn them for too long

We advise not to burn Diedrich candle longer than 4 hours at a time. Burning any longer than 4 hours will cause carbon dioxide to build up on the wick, leading to mushrooming. The wick will become unstable and generate a dangerous large flame. Not to mention smoke and release soot.

Tip 4 ~ Keep away from drafts

When burning, try to avoid areas with lots of moving air. Moving air disturbs the flame causing black burn marks on the jar.

Tip 5 ~ Store your candle properly

When not in use, keep the lid on tight to preserve the scent and keep dust and debris out.
